DELRAY BEACH, Fla. — Fifth-seeded Frenchman Jeremy Chardy and American Tim Smyczek fought through swirling winds to reach the quarterfinals of the Delray Beach Open on Thursday.
Chardy joined fourth-seeded Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov of Bulgaria as one of only two seeded players left.
Chardy trailed 2-0 to 19-year-old Noah Rubin of New York, before winning 12 of the next 16 games for a 6-4, 6-2 victory. He will play either qualifier John-Patrick Smith of Australia or Argentine Juan Martin del Potro who is playing his first ATP tournament in 11 months due to wrist surgery.
Smyczek had a more dramatic comeback against fellow American Donald Young.
