Simona Halep advances as top seeds recover poise in Birmingham

Simona Halep led a strong day for the top seeds to reach the quarter-finals at the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.

The Romanian, seeded No1 at the Wimbledon lead-up tournament, took only 50 minutes to brush aside Klara Koukalova 6-1, 6-3 in their third-round match at Edgbaston Priory, proving unerringly consistent with her first serve.

With the second seed, Ana Ivanovic, falling on Wednesday, and the former world No1 Victoria Azarenka being forced to withdraw through injury, this was a day that more closely followed the expected script.

The third seed, Carla Suárez Navarro, got the better of the 13th seed, Svetlana Kuznetzova, 6-3, 6-4, while the fourth seed, Angelique Kerber, was a 6-4, 6-2 winner over Jelena Jankovic.
