Sunsets have had more suspense than Serena Williams’s 6-1, 6-0 victory over Wang Qiang in the quarterfinals of the United States Open.
Williams was an irresistible force from the start on Tuesday evening in Arthur Ashe Stadium, pounding serves, groundstrokes and returns for winners the way she did back in her days (and nights) of dominating the women’s tour.
The performance gave the 37-year-old Williams her 100th singles victory at the U.S. Open, one short of the women’s record held by Chris Evert.
Williams, who will face fifth-seeded Elina Svitolina in the semifinals, seemed to have more trouble keeping her new bodysuit in place than her game on Tuesday.
