Serena Williams had to dig deep to win her 24th straight Grand Slam match today in the third round of Wimbledon, as home favorite Heather Watson was twice just two points away from becoming the first British WTA player since 1979 to beat a reigning world No.1.
Watson was absolutely dominated in the first set, but showed her grit in the second set, miraculously winning six games in a row with three service breaks to level the match and race into an unbelievable 3-0 lead in the deciding set. Williams clawed back to 3-3 and held serve in the seventh game of the set, but Watson held her own as well and amazingly earned another break to lead 5-4.
