Roger Federer sees off Ernests Gulbis to keep Halle defence on track

Roger Federer defeated Ernests Gulbis in straight sets to move into the quarter-finals of the Gerry Weber Open in Halle.

Federer, seven times a winner of the tournament and the top seed, and Gulbis had gone to a decider in each of their last four tour meetings, winning two apiece, but Federer was a straightforward 6-3, 7-5 victor over the Latvian on Wednesday.

Next up for the defending champion is Germany’s Florian Mayer, who progressed with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-4) win against Steve Johnson.

Tomas Berdych, seeded three, and Ivo Karlovic, seeded eight, also made safe progress and will meet in the last eight.
