Roger Federer beaten in Monte Carlo Masters third round by Gaël Monfils

Roger Federer has been knocked out of the Monte Carlo Masters in the third round by Gaël Monfils.

Monfils’ 6-4 7-6 (7-5) victory was his second consecutive win on clay over the 17-time Grand Slam champion, following his straight sets win during last year’s Davis Cup final.

Federer, who played his first tournament since losing in the Indian Wells final nearly four weeks ago, made too many mistakes in a match featuring some spectacular shots.

Earlier, the defending champion Stanislas Wawrinka suffered an ugly third round beating at the hands of the Bulgarian Grigor Dimitrov.
