The elements were not particularly kind to the 2017 Western & Southern Open on Thursday as play inside the Lindner Family Tennis Center was cut short due to repeated rain showers.
After the early-day matches completed without interruption, several rain showers messed with play starting in the early afternoon, with the last and most persistent front of rain proving terminal for the day, causing various matches to be canceled.
Among the players affected were world #1 Karolina Pliskova, who barely got her third-round encounter with Camila Giorgi started, as well as Toronto champion Elina Svitolina whose duel against Germany’s Julia Görges is among the matches that have been bumped to Friday.
