The annual grass season kicks into higher gear in Birmingham this weekend as the Aegon Classic is the first Premier level grass event before Wimbledon.
Held in Birmingham’s Edgebaston Priory Club, the 2017 was meant to set a new record in terms of star players at the event at eight of the current Top 10 had signed up to play, rounded out by Maria Sharapova joining the event via a wild card.
Unfortunately for the tournament, the original player list fell apart in spectacular fashion. Following Maria Sharapova’s injury withdrawal, one after another top player had to withdraw with injury, including last year’s champion Madison Keys, Roland Garros finalist Simona Halep, Karolina Pliskova & Agnieszka Radwanska.
