Thursday’s schedule at the Palermo Ladies Open featured four second-round matches and in the first three the winners rallied from a set down in encounters that lasted over two hours.
After losing the first set, fourth seed Anett Kontaveit raised her level in the second and third sets and converted her fifth match point to avoid an upset by Laura Siegemund, 3-6 6-2 6-2. The Estonian world No.22 has not lost to a player ranked outside the Top 50 for more than a year, i.e. since 2019 Wimbledon when she fell to 68th-ranked Karolina Muchova, who has since climbed to the 26th spot in the rankings.
