The British wildcards Naomi Broady and Johanna Konta enjoyed impressive wins in the first round of the Aegon Classic in Birmingham.
Broady, 25, defeated the Croatian Ajla Tomljanovic 6-3, 6-4 while Konta was even more emphatic in dispatching Australia’s Jarmila Gajdosova 6-1, 6-3 in less than an hour.
Broady will take on Romania’s world No3 Simona Halep in the next round and said: “I’m excited about it. I’ve got no pressure on me whatsoever. If I serve well, who knows what’s going to happen.
“I don’t think grass is her favourite surface, so we’ll wait and see.
