World number eight Rafael Nadal is out of the US Open after losing a five-set, third-round thriller to Italian Fabio Fognini at Flushing Meadows.
Nadal, the winner of 14 Grand Slam titles, won the first two sets in the Arthur Ashe Stadium, but lost the next three to go down 6-3 6-4 4-6 3-6 4-6.
