Charleston’s Shelby Rogers made her best showing at her home tournament by reaching the quarterfinals, but veteran Mirjana Lucic-Baroni stopped her from going further by absolutely dominating their encounter after losing a very close first set.
The 24-year-old Rogers twice led by a break in the opening set, but wasted that lead and even had to save a set point in the tiebreak. Rogers actually first had a set point at 5-4, but double-faulted on it and the 35-year-old Lucic-Baroni recovered, forcing a tiebreak which was as close as the set itself.
