The British No2 Johanna Konta’s impressive run at the Aegon International in Eastbourne has been brought to an end by the Swiss teenager Belinda Bencic, who prevailed in their quarter-final clash 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.
Konta had claimed the scalps of the world No8 Ekaterina Makarova and 20th-ranked Garbiñe Muguruza en route to the last eight but could not repeat the feat against the highly-rated Bencic.
She began brightly enough, breaking Bencic’s first service game before taking the first set 6-2 but Bencic roared back against the world No146 to clinch the second set to love.
Konta, 24, was then seen by the doctor during the changeover prior to the start of the third set and while she was given the green light to continue, Bencic, who reached the quarter-finals of the 2014 US Open, wrapped up the decider 6-3.
