Jelena Ostapenko wins first grass-court title in Eastbourne

Former Roland Garros champion Jelena Ostapenko won her first WTA title on grass and fourth overall with a 6-3 6-3 victory over Anett Kontaveit in the final of the Viking International Eastbourne.

Making fifth appearance at Eastbourne, Ostapenko competed as a wildcard. The Latvian eliminated Anastasia Pavlyuchenkova, Ons Jabeur, Daria Kasatkina, Elena Rybakina and in the end Kontaveit in 65 minutes to become just the third wildcard to triumph at this British tournament.

The world No.43 Ostapenko, who played the 2018 Wimbledon semifinals and clinched the girls’ title there in 2014, won over 78% of her first-service points against Kontaveit, recorded 24 winners to her opponent’s 17, and served no double faults for the second match in a row.
