Petra Kvitova and Anna Karolina Schmiedlova took the Arthur Ashe Stadium court at 11:10 a.m. Saturday, about 10 hours after Rafael Nadal and Fabio Fognini departed it.
The stadium had been meticulously cleaned and was mostly empty as fans were slowly making their way inside and around the grounds.
There were no echoes of “Vamos!” or “Forza!” remaining from another memorable night session at the United States Open, when Nadal lost a match after winning the first two sets for the first time in more than 10 years.
One definitive remnant of Friday’s late-night drama was the men’s singles draw posted outside Louis Armstrong Stadium.
