Martina Hingis lost 6-4 6-0 to Agnieszka Radwanska as she returned to singles tennis after an eight-year absence in the Fed Cup.
The 34-year-old Swiss, a five-time Grand Slam singles champion, twice fought back from a break down in the first set before succumbing.
Radwanska, the world number nine, then dominated a second set that only lasted 28 minutes.
Her victory gave Poland a 1-0 lead in the World Group play-offs.
