Nigel Willerton, head of the Tennis Integrity Unit, told a British parliamentary committee on Wednesday that he would recommend tennis’s anticorruption program have greater independence from the sport’s governing bodies in the future.
Tennis is under intense scrutiny in the wake of reports that have raised concerns about match fixing, particularly at its lowest professional levels.
In response to the concern, tennis leaders announced at last month’s Australian Open that they had commissioned an independent review of the sport’s anticorruption program, including the integrity unit, the internal watchdog group that was formed in 2008.
On Wednesday, Willerton and Chris Kermode, the chairman of the ATP Tour, answered questions relating to tennis integrity from the British House of Commons culture, media and sport committee.
