Spain’s world No.15 Garbine Muguruza won her second Grand Slam title with a strong victory over five-time champion Venus Williams in the final of Wimbledon 2017.
In the outstanding, high-quality first set that went with serve until its closing stage, the 14th-seeded Muguruza saved two set points at 5-4 15-40, one after a tense 19-shot rally. Then at 5-5, the 37-year-old Williams, bidding to become the oldest Grand Slam champion in the Open Era, recorded several forehand errors, allowing Muguruza to make the first break of the set, which turned out to be crucial.
