MELBOURNE, Australia — When Mirjana Lucic-Baroni broke into tennis’s top tier two decades ago, her name was mentioned in the same breath as those of her fellow teenage phenoms Martina Hingis and Venus Williams.
She won the Australian Open doubles title alongside Hingis in 1998, when she was only 15, and reached the semifinals of the Wimbledon singles draw the next year, beating fourth-seeded Monica Seles and eighth-seeded Nathalie Tauziat before losing to Steffi Graf in three sets.
