Roger Federer has been beaten in straight sets by world number 15 Dominic Thiem at the Italian Open.
The 34-year-old Swiss, who has been struggling with a back injury, lost their third-round encounter 7-6 (7-2) 6-4 in Rome.
Federer made 34 unforced errors as he was defeated ahead of the French Open, which starts on 22 May.
Austrian Thiem, 22, will face the winner of Richard Gasquet against Kei Nishikori in the quarter-finals.
