Eugenie Bouchard’s miserable year went from bad to worse when she was forced to retire with an injury five days before the start of Wimbledon during her third-round match against Belinda Bencic at the Aegon International.
The world No12, who has lost her opening match in seven events in 2015, was trailing 6-4, 3-0 when she called for the trainer with Bencic about to serve. It was not long before she decided that she was unable to continue with an abdominal injury.
Bouchard, a beaten finalist at Wimbledon last year, was being thoroughly outplayed by Bencic and has now lost 10 of her past 12 matches.
