WASHINGTON — U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic played two terrific tiebreakers to edge 13th-seeded Sam Querrey of the United States 7-6 (2), 7-6 (3) on Thursday and reach the Citi Open quarterfinals.
How close was it? Take away the tiebreakers, and Querrey won more total points, 74-67. He also compiled more winners, 32-25.
Both men served quite well, as to be expected, and each was broken only once.
Those breaks came in the second set, which Querrey served for while ahead 5-3. But Cilic broke there, held for 5-all, and reeled off six consecutive points during the following tiebreaker.
