Caroline Wozniacki Becomes Latest Giant to Fall at Armstrong

Like the old No. 2 Court at Wimbledon, the new Louis Armstrong Stadium is proving to be the end point for many Grand Slam champions in its first year at the U.S. Open.

Second-seeded Caroline Wozniacki was Armstrong’s latest casualty, falling 6-4, 6-2 to 36th-ranked Lesia Tsurenko of Ukraine in 1 hour 41 minutes on Thursday.

“Guess Wimbledon used to have a ‘Graveyard Court,’” Wozniacki said in reference to the court at the All England Club, which was known by some as the Graveyard of Champions. “Maybe that is going to be the new Graveyard Court.”

Wozniacki won her long-awaited first Grand Slam title in Melbourne in January, but struggled to gain any momentum in the North American hardcourt season this year.
