Bryan Brothers, Five-Time Champions, Lose Opener

Bob and Mike Bryan, the top seeds and a doubles juggernaut for more than a decade, crashed out of the United States Open in the first round Wednesday night, falling, 7-6 (4), 5-7, 6-3, to another American pair, Sam Querrey and Steve Johnson.

The Bryans, five-time champions in Flushing Meadows, won their 100th career title at the Open last year. But this year, they fell at the first hurdle, continuing what has been a disappointing year for the 37-year-old brothers. They failed to win a major title together for the first time since 2004.

Querrey and Johnson broke Bob Bryan’s serve in the second game of the third set and held on to the lead from there.
