Brengle Overcomes Makarova in First Round in Dubai

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — In her Dubai Tennis Championships debut, American Madison Brengle came from behind in both sets to beat Russia's Ekaterina Makarova 6-4, 7-5 in the first round on Monday.

Brengle trailed 2-0 in the first set, and 4-0 in the second.

The left-handed Makarova was a Dubai quarterfinalist last year, losing to eventual champion Simona Halep in three sets.

Brengle will play another lefty in fourth-seeded Petra Kvitova in the second round.

Brengle upset Kvitova in straight sets in the only other time they've played, on Stuttgart's clay last year.
