Canadian world No.15 Bianca Andreescu, who started the year ranked outside the Top 100, reached her first Grand Slam semifinal after recovering from a set down to defeat Elise Mertens of Belgium 3-6 6-2 6-3.
The 19-year-old Andreescu, seeded 15th, was frustrated by errors early on, as the 25th-seeded Mertens fired an ace to hold serve at love to win the first set. The fast-rising teen, who is now on an 11-match winning streak that dates back to the Rogers Cup title run, motivated herself before taking the court again and convincingly won the next two sets — serving well, reducing the number of mistakes and running to the balls — as her opponent’s unforced errors outnumbered her winners count.
