After sending home world No.17 Ana Ivanovic and world No.2 Agnieszka Radwanska, Swiss Timea Bacsinszky upset fifth-ranked Simona Halep in the quarterfinals, leaving the Miami Open draw with only one of the Top 12 seeds, the reigning Australian Open champion Angelique Kerber.
Bacinszky's last appearance at the tournament was back in 2011 and her two previous meetings with Halep were straight-set losses (6-1 6-3 and 6-2 6-2). But today she broke her Romanian opponent for a 3-1 lead in the second set, while in the third set she was even more decisive, racing to a 3-0 lead in the beginning.
