British number two Heather Watson reached the Australian Open second round with a 6-3 5-7 6-2 win over Egypt's Mayar Sherif.
Watson, 29, fought back from a break of serve down in the deciding set.
She will play 29th seed Tamara Zidansek of Slovenia or Arantxa Rus of the Netherlands next.
British qualifier Harriet Dart lost 6-3 6-0 to seventh seed and former French Open champion Iga Swiatek from Poland.
Watson has now reached the second round for three years in a row.
She broke 25-year-old Sherif's serve in the first and last game of the opening set, and recovered from losing her own nserve early in the final set to wrap up victory.
