Andy Murray became the third Briton to reach the fourth round of the US Open but Dan Evans lost a five-set thriller to third seed Stan Wawrinka.
Murray made 47 errors in the first two sets but beat 34-year-old world number 40 Paolo Lorenzi 7-6 (7-4) 5-7 6-2 6-3.
Evans had match point in the fourth set tie-break but Wawrinka fought back to win 4-6 6-3 6-7 (6-8) 7-6 (10-8) 6-2.
World number two Murray joined Kyle Edmund and Johanna Konta, who won on Friday, in reaching the last 16.
The last time Britain had three players in the fourth round of a Grand Slam tournament was when John Lloyd, Anne Hobbs and Jo Durie made the last 16 at the 1985 Australian Open.
