Andy Murray has pulled out of the Italian Open due to fatigue ahead of his scheduled last-16 match on Thursday.
The world No3 had been due to face Belgium’s David Goffin after cruising past Jérémy Chardy in the previous round but told a press conference that “it didn’t make sense for me to continue to compete”.
That means the Scot will be unable to follow up his victories in successive clay-court tournaments after triumphing in both Munich and Madrid.
