João Sousa was in the shower in his native Portugal in May when his brother, Luis, came running in and told him to get out and throw on a towel.
Sousa had just beaten the American Frances Tiafoe to win his third career title — but the first in his home country — at the Estoril Open, and one fan wanted to congratulate him.
Sousa stepped out of the shower to find Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the president of Portugal, standing in the locker room with his hand extended.
“He was very proud of me,” said Sousa, who was born in Guimarães but moved at age 15 to Barcelona, Spain, to train.
