Jeremy Pruitt’s impending arrival as coach at Tennessee brings an end to one of the most offbeat coaching records in SEC football.
Since the conference began football competition in 1933, Tennessee had been the only SEC school never to hire a head coach directly from the staff of another SEC program.
That run will end when Pruitt, now the defensive coordinator at Alabama, takes over to officially end the Vols’ long and tumultuous search for a successor to Butch Jones.
Over the years, Tennessee has instead found its coaches from within (like Phillip Fulmer), other conferences (like Jones) and even the NFL (like Lane Kiffin).
