Ex-Vols star Heath Shuler unimpressed with most SEC quarterbacks

KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Heath Shuler was a terrific quarterback at Tennessee. He was the runner-up in the 1993 Heisman voting and was the first Vols quarterback to throw 25 touchdown passes in a season.

In 1993, he guided an incredibly balanced offense – one that averaged 240.1 yards rushing and 242.3 passing per game in addition to setting a school record for points (471, 42.8 per game). The Vols scored at least 40 points seven times. He was the No. 3 overall pick in the 1994 NFL draft.

While UT incorporated some option to take advantage of Shuler’s running skills, Shuler would be a terror in today’s zone-read scheme.
