Titans got Saints in personnel they wanted, still failed on key run

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- The Tennessee Titans put Dexter McCluster in at running back late in their push for a field goal that might have given them a win in New Orleans in regulation.

“Trying to see if we could get them into certain personnel grouping defensively,” interim coach Mike Mularkey said. “We did not want to go against base personnel defensively. We did not want to go against base defense; we wanted to see if we could get them to substitute, which gives you different fronts to run the ball and/or throw it.”

On second-and-19 with 2:31 left in the game and the Titans at the Saints’ 41-yard line, the Titans used McCluster with two tight ends and New Orleans stayed in base defense.
