NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- When the New England Patriots drafted Matt Cassel 230th in the seventh round in 2005, they foiled the Tennessee Titans' plan.
Tennessee’s offensive coordinator at the time, Norm Chow, had worked with Cassel at USC, where the quarterback backed up Carson Palmer and Matt Leinart and threw just 33 passes in his four seasons.
On Chow’s recommendation, the Titans were ready to pounce on Cassel as an undrafted free agent.
After missing out on him, the Titans carried Matt Mauck behind Steve McNair and Billy Volek.
