Only a sophomore, TCU Track & Field star Chengetayi “Du” Mapaya added to his incredible second season by taking home a National Championship Friday night, triple jumping his way to the title with a final jump of 17.13m (56-2.5).
A native of Harare, Zimbabwe, Mapaya found himself in Fort Worth by way of St. George’s College. He made an instant impact on the TCU Track & Field program, becoming an All-American in both the indoor and outdoor track seasons for the triple jump as a freshman, a feat he would repeat this year. After finishing third in both events last season, Du was in third place once again heading into his final jump, needing to best FSU’s Armani Wallace’s jump of 16.
