ST. PETERSBURG — Yonny Chirinos doesn’t get a lot of attention. Heck, he doesn’t even get to start every game he pitches. But he is quietly posting some of the best numbers around.
Going into Wednesday’s matinee, which he is expected to start, Chirinos ranks among the AL leaders with seven wins, a 2.87 ERA, a .198 opponents average and a 0.90 WHIP (walks and hits per innings pitched).
His recent work, capped by his eight shutout innings Friday in Boston (when he retired the first 15), is clearly his best since debuting with the Rays last season.
