The Rays spent more on free agency than the Yankees, which isn’t saying much

The Rays announced today the signing of right-handed relief pitcher Ryan Webb, to a 1-year, big league contract. According to Marc Topkin, Webb’s contract is worth $1 million plus incentives.

Including Webb, the Rays committed $5.8 million in guaranteed big league contracts to free agents this winter, with the remaining $4.8 million going to 1B/OF Steve Pearce.

The Rays ranked 26th in spending this winter, ahead of just four teams. However, one of those teams was the Yankees, who spent just $1.0 million on big league free agents. Still,. the Rays are way behind the other teams in the division, including the Red Sox, who committed $217 million to David Price alone.
