Red Sox to retire Boggs' No. 26

The Boston Red Sox announced Monday that they will retire the uniform number of baseball Hall of Famer Wade Boggs (No. 26) on May 26, 2016, at Fenway Park.

The Tampa resident, who starred at Plant High School, had a career .328 batting average in 18 major-league seasons with Boston (1982-92), the New York Yankees (1993-97) and Tampa Bay Devil Rays (1998-99). In his final season, he became the 23rd member of the 3,000-hit club — and the first to reach the milestone with a home run as he connected for the Rays at Tropicana Field on August 7, 1999.
