Rays turn down St. Pete's offer allowing team to look for stadium site

ST. PETERSBURG — The Tampa Bay Rays rejected a proposal by City Council member Jim Kennedy that would have allowed the team to explore stadium locations, but cost them millions if they left the city.

Mayor Rick Kriseman met with Rays officials Thursday to present Kennedy’s plan that the city council had approved in a 5-3 vote a week earlier.

“Although we appreciate the time and attention that Mayor Kriseman and the City Council have dedicated to this issue, we do not agree to this proposal,” Rays President Brian Auld said in a statement released by the team.
