The announcement about the Rays’ March trip to Cuba is expected to be made this week, perhaps as early as today.
The Rays will play the Cuban national team March 22 in Havana. It will be the first time a major league team has traveled to Cuba since March 1999, when the Orioles played the Cuban national team in a home-and-home series. The O’s won the first game, played March 28 at Estadio Latinoamericano, 3-2 in 11 innings. The teams met again May 3 in Baltimore with Cuba winning 12-6.
It was the first time the Cuban national team played a team of major leaguers since 1959.
