Rays sign C Arencibia to minor-league deal

Rays

TORONTO — The Rays signed catcher J.P. Arencibia to a minor-league deal on Thursday. He will join Durham and get most of his playing time at first base and DH.

“(He’s) a veteran. He’s played for a while,” Rays manager Kevin Cash said. “He has some pop. He’s going to go to Durham and play a lot of first base and occasionally catch. We like what he does offensively, and any added insurance he can provide, we’ll kind of see how it goes.”

Arencibia, 29, has hit at least 10 home runs in each of his past four seasons.
