ST. PETERSBURG – Major League Baseball released this season’s uniforms and nicknames for Players’ Weekend on Tuesday. Starting in 2017, Players’ Weekend is an annual event in which teams across baseball wear special jerseys that feature nicknames rather than surnames.
The Rays roster for Players’ Weekend features creative nicknames like Tyler Glasnow’s “Baby Giraffe,” well-known nicknames like Kevin Kiermaier’s “Outlaw” and standard nicknames like Matt Duffy’s “Duffy.”
Players select their nicknames during spring training, and Duffy said he originally opted for the self-explanatory “Duffman,” the same nickname he used for Players’ Weekend in 2018. He was surprised to learn that his true last name, not his nickname will appear on this season’s jersey.
