Rays ready to play catcher they get in Matt Andriese deal

ST. PETERSBURG — There really wasn't much surprise in the Rays trading Matt Andriese on Wednesday in that they were using him as a multi-inning middle reliever and other teams valued him higher.

What was somewhat surprising was that the Rays got back a catcher from Arizona they believe is worthy of a shot in the big leagues: Michael Perez, 25, who will join them Thursday in Baltimore. Adam Moore, who was called up to replace injured Wilson Ramos, was designated for assignment.

Perez has been touted for having strong defensive tools, throwing out 34.8 percent of base stealers while hitting .
