Rays pitching coach Hickey gets new contract, signed through '18

Pitching coach Jim Hickey and the Rays agreed to a three-year contract that will keep him with Tampa Bay through the 2018 season.

The deal replaces Hickey’s contract that would have expired after the 2016 season.

The Rays, keeping with their policy of not talking about the contracts of their coaches, did not comment.

However, Hickey told the Tribune he is “ecstatic to be back with the Rays.”

Hickey joined the organization in 2007 and is largely regarded as one of the top pitching coaches in the game. His ability to relate to the pitchers on an individual basis with a no-nonsense approach as well as his detailed scouting reports on opposing hitters complied during hours of research are two keys to the success of the Rays’ staff.
