PORT CHARLOTTE — RHP Ryan Webb, signed by the Rays to a one-year contract days before the start of camp to provide the bullpen with a ground-ball pitcher, said he would like to get more strikeouts this season.
“I’m going to try to strike more people out when the opportunities are there,” he said. “You get ahead (in the count) by pitching smart, and I think that’s one thing I’ve done well in my career is being smart about situational pitching. If I need a strikeout, I know I can go and get it.”
Webb’s 3.65 groundball-to-flyball ratio was fifth highest in 2015 among American League relievers.
