Rays minor-leaguer Chris Betts just couldn’t contain his excitement in this year’s Midwest League Home Run Derby.
As a pitch left the mound Monday night, Betts’ swing sent the ball flying over the fence toward right field. It hadn’t even left the park before Betts, who plays for the Bowling Green Hot Rods, chucked his bat down the first base line.
The catcher beat Alek Thomas head-to-head in derby, celebrating his eighth homer on the play.
With the win, Betts received $1,000 in cash and a championship plaque to celebrate the 24 home runs on the evening.
