Rays lose closer Boxberger for 'roughly' eight weeks

PORT CHARLOTTE — The Rays will be without closer Brad Boxberger for at least the first month of the season after the pitcher had surgery Thursday to repair a torn abdominal abductor muscle.

Manager Kevin Cash announced Friday morning that Boxberger will miss “roughly eight weeks.” Cash said the team will have a better understanding of when Boxberger should return four weeks into his rehab.

Boxberger traveled to Philadelphia for the surgery. Cash said the injury happened in spring training.

“It was an injury he thought was kind of an unknown. Initially we thought tight (hamstring),” Cash said.
