Rays fall 2-1 in 10 innings to A’s, playoff hopes pretty much end

ST. PETERSBURG — With the weekend series against Oakland presenting his Rays with basically a final opportunity to at least make it a race for the last American League playoff spot, manager Kevin Cash wanted them, more than anything, to play how they did getting to this point.

But it didn't really play out that way, in a 2-1 loss in 10 innings that essentially ends their chances, dropping them nine games back with 16 to play.

Cash admittedly was "managing a little more aggressively" in running through his relievers, and it worked well through nine innings but led to rookie Jaime Schultz giving up the game-deciding homer to Khris Davis in the 10th.
