The Rays have demoted Richie Shaffer back to triple-A Durham and called up reliever Enny Romero, as first reported by Marc Topkin.
The Rays were already short an arm in the bullpen thanks to using a 4-man rotation during the recent stretch of off-days and then demoting Kirby Yates to activate Drew Smyly. Then, with Smyly getting knocked out early on Sunday, Alex Colome was needed to throw 3 innings which meant the Rays would have been down to five relievers instead of the more typical seven.
It is unclear if this is just a temporary situation or something more permanent.
